Ecology and economy are not conflicting forces. Nor are they two sides of the same coin, or opposite ends of a teeter-totter.
The distinction between ecology and economy is precisely the distinction between life and living. One is a noun, a condition: the scope and brilliance and diversity of life in communities, in ecosystems, on Earth. The other is a verb, an activity: our practice of the art of living, and earning a living, as individuals and communities and industries.
Finding solutions to the real and urgent problems of sustainability requires moving past polarized arguments and unhelpful artificial distinctions. It involves creating new spaces for discussions, setting new terms of engagement, and exploring beyond the bounds of one-dimensional compromises—all without losing sight of practical realities in the real world.
Navigating these waters will demand the best of our thinking, from all quarters: a free flow of knowledge and ideas grounded in a rigorous understanding of legal, policy, scientific, and pragmatic contexts. And no place in the world is better equipped and better positioned to lead the way than Canada.
